In custom hardscape designs, perfectly cutting stone or brick to match the exact dimensions of a burner pan is nearly impossible. An installation collar is one of the many gas fire pit components that acts as a flexible metal sleeve that drops into your enclosure opening, creating a perfectly level, reinforced ledge for the fire pit pan to sit on.
Without this component, pans can sag or rest unevenly on jagged masonry, which puts dangerous mechanical stress on your internal gas plumbing and creates a distinctly unfinished, amateur look.
Technical Guide: Types of Installation Collars
When engineering your outdoor fire feature, selecting the right collar ensures that your structural and aesthetic goals are met. Collars generally fall into two distinct technical categories based on how they integrate with your finished veneer.
Functional (Recessed) Collars
Functional collars are engineered to mount slightly below the final top edge of your masonry, acting as a hidden structural skeleton rather than a visible design element.
- The Benefit: This allows you to finish the top ledge of your fire pit with custom cut stone, tile, or concrete that extends slightly over the collar, completely hiding the metal from view.
- Best For: Modern, seamless architectural designs where the heavy burner pan and Gas Fire Pit Components need to be deeply recessed to support thick layers of lava rock or glass.
Decorative (Flanged) Collars
Decorative collars feature a wide, visible top lip (flange) that extends outward and rests directly on top of your finished masonry.
- The Benefit: The extended lip actively conceals any uneven or chipped stone cuts around the perimeter of the opening. It essentially acts as a polished trim ring that perfectly frames the fire pit pan.
- Best For: Retrofits, standard drop-in pan installations, or highly textured block enclosures where achieving a perfectly smooth internal cut is unfeasible.
Gas Safety and the Importance of Ventilation
While collars provide necessary structural framing at the top of your fire feature, proper ventilation components should be placed at the bottom to maintain a safe operating environment. Because the collar creates a tight seal around the burner pan, any trapped fuel, especially heavier-than-air liquid propane, will pool at the base of the enclosure.
Installing stainless steel air vents at the lowest point of your masonry allows this volatile gas to escape safely while simultaneously keeping your internal ignition valves cool during operation.
